Blue Mood (Al Mar)

In project Blue Mood (Al Mar), Sander Coers explores the emotional landscape of adolescent men through memories and personal experience.

Blue Mood (Al Mar) was selected for the Palm* Photo Prize in 2022, and has been featured in Harper's Bazaar, i-D, and Vogue, amongst others. The work has been exhibited internationally at 10-14 Gallery in London, Josilda da Conceição Gallery in Amsterdam, and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

Inspired by his own upbringing in a small town in The Netherlands, in Blue Mood (Al Mar), Sander explores the universal adolescent experience of longing for freedom and adventure, whilst paradoxically yearning for the past.

The project serves as a sequel to Come Home, in which Sander photographs a cast of characters undergoing the transformation to adulthood.

"The visual language employed in Blue Mood (Al Mar) is reminiscent of a nostalgic visual essay, invoking a sense of yearning and reflection. The saturated colors evoke not only a sense of warmth, but also lend the images an aged quality, serving as a conduit for fleeting memories and sensory experiences. My aim is to transport the viewer into a vivid and evocative fever dream. "
